Writer’s Workshop is a comprehensive step-by-step guide for primary school teachers to set up and implement an innovative and effective writing program in the classroom.

The book diffes from traditional writing models as it sees writing as a cyclical rather than a linear process, giving students the autonomy to choose where they want to start and continue in the writing process. In doing so, students will find authentic reasons to write, grow in confidence, and, of equal importance, begin to enjoy their writing.
The framework that is followed in this approach involves five steps entitled: Mini-Lessons, Checking The Status, Hot Penning, Writing Time, and Reflection and Sharing. Writer’s Workshop sessions must be predictable to be successful.

Following this format will help facilitators of the program build confidence in their students and reduce failure caused by self-doubt that we hear through comments such as, “I don’t know what to write about”, “My writing is not good enough”, “I have no real reason to write”.

Spell It Right! is a bright yet simple set of books with activities based on the idea that words cluster into groups and themes. When we talk about a subject, say weather, we use other words that also relate to that theme.

Books 1 & 2 use simple lists of 10 words on 40 themes with activities including word building, sentences, illustrations, word meanings, cloze, puzzles and sleuths, rhymes, sorting and writing. The activity pages in Book 3 have a range of tasks that vary from page to page, but contains The List and a mixture of the following tasks:

Word Work – word origins and usage;

Word Puzzles – word games and word plays which are fun but challenging;

Find Out! – research activities involving written and oral work; and

Your Work – challenges incorporating the student and the subject.

The Spell It Right! series is not presented as a complete spelling system, but as a purposeful extra…an extra children will love to use. The activities are fun, but have an underlying language core. They are ideal for both class and homework use.
