Writer’s Workshop is a comprehensive step-by-step guide for primary school teachers to set up and implement an innovative and effective writing program in the classroom.

The book diffes from traditional writing models as it sees writing as a cyclical rather than a linear process, giving students the autonomy to choose where they want to start and continue in the writing process. In doing so, students will find authentic reasons to write, grow in confidence, and, of equal importance, begin to enjoy their writing.
The framework that is followed in this approach involves five steps entitled: Mini-Lessons, Checking The Status, Hot Penning, Writing Time, and Reflection and Sharing. Writer’s Workshop sessions must be predictable to be successful.

Following this format will help facilitators of the program build confidence in their students and reduce failure caused by self-doubt that we hear through comments such as, “I don’t know what to write about”, “My writing is not good enough”, “I have no real reason to write”.

Each section of Basic Language Skills Book 2 is based on a fictional narrative which is used as a source for the accompanying skill-based activities.

Children are required to use reading skills such as prediction, interpretation and substantiation as they examine the underlying themes of each story.

Aspects of grammar that are covered include punctuation, (possessive apostrophes and quotation marks for direct speech) and parts of speech (nouns, verbs and adjectives).

Text types that the children will create include reports, letters, directions, advertisements and poetry.

The Spelling and Language Practice Book 2 has been carefully designed to equip children aged ten to twelve years with strategies that will help them learn to spell and use language creatively.

The activity sheets encourage students to learn through phonics and explore how words relate to one another. The activites can be done individually, in smalll groups, set as homework or given to fast finishers.

Each activity sheet comes with extra things to do. Students can complete these extras in their spelling or language books. Some of these extras involve a sense of the ridiculous which adds an element of fun to their learning.
