Created for classroom teachers, the focus of the Maths Rescue series is on the reinforcement of “the basics” in maths, as well as activities aimed at developing understanding of mathematics concepts. Students with Specific Learning Difficulties experience a range of problems with their academic learning. These problems include word recognition and comprehension; coping with pages that are too cluttered and with too many differing requirements; being able to sequence, recall and apply strategies in abstract situations; striving to process information while working to meet deadlines and having trouble with personal organisation with their schoolwork.

While the books in this series are designed for students with learning difficulties, they can be used as a simple and straightforward introduction to concepts or a reinforcement of mathematical strategies for the whole class. The books follow a basic format, with each activity usually containing a choice of two worksheets to cater for a range of ability levels. Activities in the series are linked to National Mathematics Curriculum outcomes.

Maths Rescue 2: Measurement, Chance and Data contains:

Information on Specific Learning Difficulties: Information from a variety of referenced sources including online literature from recognised Australian organisations. Includes descriptions of the various learning difficulties and ideas for strategies in the classroom and at home;

Student Lifesavers: Clearly presented charts designed as a “basic facts” reference for students who are working though more difficult maths concepts;

“Parent Power” Pages: Informative pages for parents on each mathematical unit. These pages include terminology, mathematical strategies, examples and reinforcement ideas for the home and community;

Progress Charts: Students can keep an ongoing record of their homework achievements.

This fully revised series of photocopiable activity books uses a structured, three-tiered approach to cater for gifted and/or talented students working within the regular classroom. There are titles available for: Junior Primary, Middle Primary and Upper Primary. Activities have been presented in a range of interesting and motivating theme books linked to upper primary student outcomes. Pacemaker: It’s About Time can be used for advanced students working independently or as an adjunct for topics studied by the class throughout the year.

Pacemaker: It’s About Time covers a broad range of interesting concepts within the topic of “time”. Activities enable students to apply problem solving strategies as they explore the instruments and methods used to measure time throughout history and investigate global applications such as time zones. Students can make a range of time-keeping tools with detailed instructions and use their creative skills to design ideas for the future.

Working On Number And Algebra is part of the Number Strategies series which helps students develop their skills and abilities in topics on Number and Algebra.

The activities in the series are guided by the National Curriculum and contain a blend of activities ranging from the developmental and investigative to application style problems. Most activities contain a final extension task where students can further extend their understanding, quiz their peers, research a new idea or develop their mathematical creativity.

This book, Working On Number And Algebra, provides a range of activities to help students develop their mental skills and abilities when calculating with directed numbers, fractions, decimals and percentages. The aim is to show students that mathematics is flexible and that there are many ways to approach the same calculation.

There is also an emphasis on using equations to solve real life problems as well as focus on exposing students to the concept that algebra is used to simplify our understanding of the world. Each section is proceeded by extensive teacher notes and guidance on how to teach a new strategy. This book can assist with teachers’ lesson development and also help spark creativity in the Mathematics classroom.

Working on Algebra provides a range of activities to expose students to algebraic ideas. Students are encouraged to look for patterns and to examine ways in which we can begin to generalise our mathematical findings. The emphasis is on providing students with ample opportunity to explain how they know what they know and to practise explaining their thought processes. Exploring number patterns, conjectures, graphs, tables and relationships are all part of learning how to think algebraically.
