Brain Benders 3 for upper primary students is the third and final book in the series. It contains thirty-four photocopiable mathematical problems which are all curriculum linked. The book caters for a range of abilities within the upper primary cohort. In the middle of the book, under the heading Brain Busters, you will find more challenging problems designed to extend students. At the back of the book there are sixteen short brain teasers which can be used as an ideal way to introduce any maths lesson.

Each problem appears next to an answer page which not only provides the problem’s solution but clearly explains the methods that can be used to arrive at the solution. In this way, Brain Benders 3 is designed to not only test a wide range of methods to solve problems but to equip students with effective problem solving techniques and strategies which will help strengthen their mathematical skills.

The Primary Maths Problems Series is a 3-book series aimed at developing a range of problem solving skills and strategies across all strands of the mathematics curriculum. Each book contains over 90 task cards which each deal with one problem. The problems can be worked through as a whole class, in small groups, in pairs, or as an individual homework or extension activity. Detailed teachers’ notes provide information about the use of each problem solving strategy as well as specific examples. Strategies covered include:

Think, estimate and check
Draw a diagram
Look for patterns
Make a model
Act out the problem
Construct a table
Write a statement
Make a list
Calculate

The tasks cover all areas of the mathematics curriculum including Space and Location, Number, Measurement and Chance and Data. Mathematical reasoning and the development of individual problem solving skills have been incorporated within each of these areas. All task cards are outcome linked and have provision for student self-assessment.

The development of skills in young children is particularly important as the child is introduced to the first formal mathematical concepts. Mastering Maths 2: Early Operations has been designed to provide young children with interesting and attractive activities to develop these early mathematical skills and knowledge.
